Unlocking Your Intervention Program’s Potential
Aug 18, 2025
Starting a new school year as an interventionist can feel overwhelming. Whether you’re stepping into this role for the first time or refining your existing program, one thing is certain: the impact you make is critical.
I know this because I’ve been where you are. Early in my career as a new reading specialist, I was constantly asking myself: How do you really teach a child to read? Graduate school didn’t provide the practical answers, but through training and experience, I learned how to build programs grounded in the science of reading. Over the years, I developed state-recognized intervention programs, and today I share those lessons with you.
Why Reading Comprehension Isn’t “One Thing”
As Dr. Hugh Catts reminds us, reading comprehension cannot be taught as a single skill—it’s the product of many interwoven abilities. The Simple View of Reading makes this clear: comprehension depends on both word recognition and language comprehension.
-
Students with dyslexia often struggle on the word recognition side.
-
English learners may decode accurately but lack the background knowledge and vocabulary needed to comprehend.
Recognizing the difference allows us to design targeted instruction.
Building Effective Systems
Healthy intervention systems don’t rely on canned programs or computer-based solutions alone. Instead, they’re built on:
-
Strong Tier 1 instruction with prevention in mind
-
Targeted Tier 2 and Tier 3 supports that address assessed needs
-
Assessment and data cycles that guide every instructional decision
-
Evidence-based, structured literacy resources
-
Clear roles and responsibilities so every team member knows their part
When schools prioritize early literacy, especially in K–2, they close gaps before they widen into long-term struggles. But even in upper grades, it’s possible to make progress by aligning systems and focusing on what matters most.
Practical Tips for Interventionists
-
Define your role. Create a clear list of responsibilities for interventionists, teachers, administrators, and paras.
-
Have a plan. Base instruction on screening and diagnostic data, then monitor progress every 2–3 weeks.
-
Prioritize scheduling and resources. Without structured time and the right tools, intervention loses its effectiveness.
